Chhath Puja: A Celebration of Faith, Light & Purity
From Nahay Khay to Usha Arghya, here’s your calm, eco-friendly guide to Chhath—ritual order, fasting notes, outfit & jewelry tips, and crowd-safe essentials.
Rituals in order: the 4 sacred steps
1) Nahay Khay
- Purification bath; clean, satvik meal (lauki-chana dal, rice)
- Begin household cleanliness and ghat readiness
2) Kharna
- Day-long fast; evening kheer-roti prasad after sunset
- Then a nirjal fast (waterless) begins for many devotees
3) Sandhya Arghya
- Offerings to the setting sun at river/pond/ghat
- Calm, mindful chants; biodegradable diyas & flowers
4) Usha Arghya
- Final offerings to the rising sun next morning
- Conclude with blessings for health & prosperity
Note: Traditions vary by family and region (Bihar, UP, Jharkhand, Nepal). Follow your elder’s guidance for exact vrat rules.
Comfort-first outfits & jewelry: sunrise/sunset ready
- Dress light & modest: Cotton/silk-blend saree or kurta set that dries quickly and allows easy movement.
- Secure jewelry: Choose snag-free studs, simple chains, and slim bangles; avoid heavy danglers in crowds.
- Water-safe care: If water touches metal, pat dry and wipe with a soft microfiber cloth.
- Hands free: Keep a small sling for prasad, diya matches, and a cloth towel.
Eco-friendly Chhath: devotion without pollution
- Use clay diyas, natural flowers, and leaf plates; skip plastic & glitter.
- Carry a trash bag; leave the ghat cleaner than you found it.
- Choose cotton threads and natural colors for soops & tokri decor.
- Walk in single file; keep ghats safe for elderly and kids.
Quick FAQs

Prefer unscented or very mild—avoid strong aerosols near the water and diya flames.
What if jewelry gets wet?
Pat dry immediately, then wipe with microfiber. Store in a pouch after returning home.
Any food safety tip for prasad?
Use clean, covered containers. Keep kheer & fruits away from dust; distribute with washed hands.
